The Wonder of Tech is excited to welcome Ian Andrews whose guest post points out the pros and cons of the new iPhone X.

Most launch events by top tech companies create excitement that also comes with the need to learn more about the gadgets. The iPhone X has generated a lot of excitement, as Apple shifts from one design convention to a brand new concept. But even more sensational is the price of the phone, which starts at $1,000, the highest starting price in the history of the iPhone.

Here are considerations you should know about as you decide whether to spend $1000+ on a new iPhone.

Pros of the iPhone X

Face ID

Unique to the iPhone X is Face ID, a new way for you to unlock your phone by looking at it. Instead of the Touch ID fingerprint security scanning system, Face ID is available on the iPhone X.

Face ID is a system that scans your face to recognize you and unlock your phone. According to Apple, Face ID is the most secure way to protect your phone from intrusion. The chances of someone fooling the phone are 1 in 1,000,000, which basically means it is the most solid security mechanism on the iPhone.

Wireless Charging

Wireless charging on the iPhone X helps you to get rid of annoying cables. No need to plug your phone into a cable to charge it, just lay it on an inductive charging mat.

Fast Charging

Just like the iPhone 8, the iPhone X also has fast charging capability, which means in about one hour you could have the phone charged to more than 70 percent, and 50 percent in 30 minutes, if you use a USB-C charge cord.

Once your phone is fully charged, the iPhone X has a reported a battery life that is longer by two hours than the iPhone 7, so you can get more use out of your phone between charges.

Bigger, Better Screen

The screen of the iPhone X is much better and bigger than any other iPhone. It features full HD OLED and True Tone technology. Its size is 5.8 inches and Apple included the highest pixel capacity ever, meaning your viewing experience will be superior to other iPhones.

Bigger Is Smaller

Although the iPhone X has a bigger screen than the iPhone 8 Plus (5.5″ vs 5.8″), the size of the body of the iPhone X is smaller than the 8 Plus because the screen of the iPhone X goes edge to edge. The height and width of the iPhone X are smaller than those of the iPhone 8, even though the screen is bigger.

Portrait Lighting

Another innovation on the iPhone X is Portrait Lighting. This photography feature calculates different parameters like light, motion, and objects. It is then able to produce special lighting effects to make the most of facial contours.

Animojis

If you’re a fan of emojis, then Animojis will be a big pro for the iPhone for you. Animojis are animated emojis using your face. The technology that maps your face for Face ID is also used to create Anomijis you can send to your friends in iMessage.

Cons of the iPhone X

Besides having many benefits, the iPhone X also has a few shortcomings that should be addressed as well. Here are some of them you might want to know about before investing in the iPhone X.

High Price

Many buyers have complained about the pricing of the iPhone X citing it as overpriced. This is the most expensive iPhone ever and the base price is fixed at $1,000. This means only those who can raise that much money will be able afford to get one, leaving some who could get previous models unable to buy their chosen iPhone.

Fewer color options

Unlike its predecessors, the iPhone X comes in fewer colors. It will be available in silver and space gray (black) and many people think Apple should have considered adding more colors for those who don’t like the options offered.

Fans of gold and rose gold will be especially disappointed in the lack of color choices with the iPhone X.

One Size Fits All?

The iPhone has come in two sizes for the past few years, the standard iPhone and the Plus size. But the iPhone X only comes in one size, leaving those who want a smaller screen having to compromise with the iPhone X.

Notch Not Popular

While the iPhone X screen covers the length of the phone, a notch blocks the screen at the top for the front-facing camera. This notch has been criticized by some as interrupting the view of the screen.

Touch ID

Although Apple replaced the Touch ID with the more advanced Face ID, there are those who will take some time to get used to the new feature. To them, the Touch ID was easier to use and removing it from the iPhone X was not a good idea.

Learning Curve

If you’re used to the gestures you use with your current iPhone and don’t like change, you may be reluctant to learn the new gestures with the iPhone X. Not having a Home button means that the iPhone X will have new commands for tasks such as summoning Siri and switching between apps.
